Top Five Spookily Cute Pokemon!
Faded leaves are falling from the trees, ghostly costumes hang from racks in the shops, the smell of Pumpkin spice is in the air- yes it's Halloween! And in celebration of this spooky time of year I'm going to give a run down of five Pokemon that (whilst adorable) should send a shiver down your spine for one reason or another. It's also an excuse to show off my painting of Pumpkaboo I did for Halloween that I posted on Twitter yesterday. If you don't follow me, check below for my Twitter username and keep up to date on further posts, ramblings and Halloween hi-jinx in the lead up to October 31st.
5. Litwick
This little fella came into a conversation I had this morning with a colleague who had no idea this adorable waxy cutie even existed! A group of Litwick appeared in the Pokemon anime episode 'Scare at the Litwick Mansion!' where they, and Litwick's evolution Lampent, tried to take Ash and Co and Team Rocket to the Ghost World! Spooky! Litwick debuted in Gen 5 of the games alongside it's evolutions Lampent and Chandelure. It's Pokedex entry for Omega Ruby states 'While shining a light and pretending to be a guide, it leeches off the life force of any who follow it' making Litwick a sinister companion in a cute disguise.
4. Phantump
When Gen 6 came out Phantump and it's big googly eyes immediately grabbed my attention. How could you not find it's tiny ghostly arms, whispy ickle head and it's tinsy winsy mouth super cute? But Phantump, the pre-evolution of Trevenant, is more than meets the eye. Phantump made it's anime debut in 'Making friends and influencing Villains!' where a group of Phantump become infuriated when Team Rocket gobble down fruits that were supposed to be offerings to them. It's Pokedex entry for Alpha Sapphire says 'According to old tales, these Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died while lost in the forest.' Shudder.
3. Driftloon
The Ghost/Flying Pokemon Driftloon looks like nothing more than an innocent balloon inspired Pokemon at first. Driftloon appeared first in Gen 4 capturable at the Valley Windworks in Sinnoh on a Friday. Driftloon was a favourite of Gym Leader Fantina, debuting as part of her team in the anime in the episode 'Playing the levelling field!' where it evolved into it's evolution Drifblim. So far so good, what could possibly be spooky about this little fella? All of it's Pokedex entries are, at best, a bit odd but it's Alpha Sapphire entry really sends a shiver down your spine. According the dex 'These Pokémon are called the "Signpost for Wandering Spirits." Children holding them sometimes vanish.' So don't go mistaking a Driftloon for a balloon if you see one wandering around anytime soon.
2. Mimikyu
Mimikyu will appear in Gen 7 of the Pokemon games when Sun and Moon launches this November. So sadly there is no anime debut or Pokedex entry to back up why this admirably cute guy is such a scary so and so underneath! But it's obvious really, Mimikyu's admiration or even possibly jealously of Pikachu's popularity has drove it to dress up like the electric mouse in what looks like bedsheets. It's claw like black hand swings from underneath it's disguise, which hides it from harmful sunlight, when it attacks and story goes if you lift up the sheets to reveal Mimikyu's true self you will be hit by a mysterious illness. This all the more makes me excited to see Mimikyu in action next month, albeit late for Halloween!
1. Pumpkaboo
Duh! I painted my favourite little Pumpkin for Halloween, how could he not be on this list? Pumpkaboo is the Pokemon that springs to mind at this time of year, not just for it's obvious Halloween appearance that makes you desperate to grab a Pumpkin to carve (not Pumpkaboo obviously!), but also for it's spooky backstory. Pumpkaboo made its debut in 'The Bamboozling Forest!' where Jessie of Team Rocket fame tripped over a Super Size Pumpkaboo in the forest, later catching it and evolving it into a Gourgeist. Pumpkaboo was one of the many new Pokemon launched in Gen 6, with a creepy Pokedex entry for Pokemon Alpha Sapphire stating that 'It is said to carry wandering spirits to the place where they belong so they can move on.' Which I guess makes Pumpkaboo a creepy yet cute yet caring Pokemon?
